Georgia's Pre-K Program
Georgia's Pre-K Program is a lottery funded educational program for Georgia's four year olds to prepare children for Kindergarten. This program is free for Georgia resident families with children who turn four years of age by September 1st of the current school year. Georgia’s Pre-K Program is voluntary for families, and operates on the regular school system calendar for the length of a typical school day. Extended day services (before and after care) beyond the 6.5 hour instructional day are available.
The Childcare and Parent Services (CAPS)
The Childcare and Parent Services (CAPS) program supports early education goals by assisting low income families with the cost of child care while they work, go to school or training, or participate in other work-related activities. Through the CAPS program, eligible students receive CAPS "scholarships," and CAPS becomes an important pathway to ensure access to high quality child care for CAPS families. Families work with two main units of the CAPS program. The Scholarship Administration unit works with new applicants to determine eligibility for the program and help select high quality child care. Consultants with the Family Support unit are then assigned to families who live in their region of the state. These Family Support Consultants will work with and advocate for families, will help families if their situation changes, will assist families with renewing their benefits, and will connect families with resources to help overcome obstacles to training or employment.
Quality Rated Child Care
Great Beginnings is in the process of obtaining Quality Rating from the State of Georgia. Quality Rated is Georgia’s system to determine, improve, and communicate the quality of programs that provide child care. Quality Rated is provided to early education and school-age care programs that meet or exceed the minimum state requirements. By participating in Georgia’s voluntary Quality Rated program, programs make a commitment to work continuously to improve the quality of care they provide to children and families. Quality Rated gives parents and families greater confidence in their child care choice because independent, credentialed experts in early education have assessed whether programs follow best practices, such as:
- Employing qualified and well-trained teachers
- Providing a safe, healthy and caring environment
- Implementing individualized instruction
- Offering a curriculum that prepares children for kindergarten
- A focus on both active learning and social-emotional development
- Engaging families
- Providing a low teacher-student ratio
